Clearly based on most of the reviews everyone found something I did not see and it was like pulling teeth to get through the first three chapters. Perhaps it is just me but I do not like present and past tense at the same time and sentence. It is like telling the story in present time the putting everything else in parenthesis. As an example, one sentence in present tense someone talking about another person. Nine paragraphs explaining the past story of the person being spoken about then it continues in present tense again.

It was to disjointed and difficult to follow and if I could return something because it sucked I would send it back to the seller.

A Potion to Die For A Magic Potion Mystery edition by Heather Blake Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

I had high hopes for this story because I so enjoyed the Wishcraft series from Heather Blake. This book seemed superficial and the universe she created didn't hold any appeal for me. I didn't feel connected to the setting nor the family history as I did with Darcy and the Enchanted Village. The characters and setting didn't compel me to want to read with enthusiasm and interest. Instead, I just read through this story quickly. I don't think I'll be back to visit any time soon.
As the owner of Little Shop of Potions, a magic potion shop specializing in love potions, Carly Bell Hartwell finds her product more in demand than ever. A local soothsayer has predicted that a couple in town will soon divorce--and now it seems every married person in Hitching Post, Alabama, wants a little extra matrimonial magic to make sure they stay hitched.
But when Carly finds a dead man in her shop, clutching one of her potion bottles, she goes from most popular potion person to public enemy number one. In no time the murder investigation becomes a witch hunt--literally! Now Carly is going to need to brew up some serious sleuthing skills to clear her name and find the real killer--before the whole town becomes convinced her potions really are to die for!

I just finished A Potion to die for - I can't wait to read the next book in the series "The Goodbye Witch". I loved the humor that is threw out the book. I even love how weird her family is. Never a dull moment when you have such an interesting family. And live in a small town that knows and understands the really odd ones. I can't wait to see what's in store for all the Characters. As for the Mystery part of the book - Honestly I did not have it worked out. I thought I did, but boy was I way wrong. Great story, I loved it! Heather Blake writes a story that you can get into and feel like your right there with them and can see the town she describes.
It was a fun little book. It is really more cute Southern than witchcraft, but as mystery is was worth the read. There is a nice assortment of quirky characters, twists in who is really in with whom, and some fun scenes. There are enough clues to point you in several wrong directions and the end, while not perfect, is logical and fits with the clues. That is one of my pet peeves in a mystery, the reader should be able to figure it out along with the hero. Throw the killer in in the last three pages and expect to see a 1 star from me.

Some downsides

If you are looking for oddly skin tinted, hooked nosed, spell casting, Disney/Oz/Harry Potter witches, this ain't them. The regular townspeople of Hitching Post seem to not be bothered at all by the witches down the block.

Magic actually plays a small part in solving the mystery. If you are looking for a 'reveal the killer' spell, it isn't here. The mystery is solved by reasoning and discovery.

There are some of the other crutches of modern mystery writing, like conveniently poor cell reception. So it goes.

I would buy another Heather Blake.
OK...I don't know how she does it...with three series with paranormal elements, maybe she's got some witchy blood in her veins. All I can say is that Heather Blake (Webber) just keeps getting better!

Hitching Post, Alabama is a small town known for its wedding chapels, quickie marriages (and divorces) and some interesting shops. Carly Hartwell owns the Little Shop of Potions, having inherited the "special secret ingredient" handed down in her family. Her shop specializes in potions to help people, whether with their health or love life.

All positive, right? Until the day Carly walks into her shop to find a local lawyer dead, with one of her potion bottles in his lifeless hand. The day gets even better when the local cop investigating the death is Carly's ex (after two disastrous attempts at a wedding) Dylan, who still has the ability to make her pulse rate rise.

Soon after, another near death involving one of Carly's potion bottles has the locals looking at her suspiciously and staying away from her shop. Carly wants to clear her name and keep her business so she starts asking questions around town.

Throw in her crazy family (cousin Delia who deals in the family "dark magic", three interesting aunts, a mother who has a wedding chapel and is determined to pull business from her arch-rival), her attraction to Dylan, and a local coach who has never forgiven her for turning him in years ago for some peeping during gym class...well, it's quite the cast of characters.

It's a great ride and I made myself slow down my reading because I didn't want it to end. I'm really looking forward to book 2!
