A coming of age story of a boy trying to find his place in the world when the world doesn't seem to have a place for him. When Norman and his younger brother Carl stumble across an injured rabbit in a field, the boys begin to nurse it back to health and soon discover the rabbit means more to both than they could possibly imagine. The boys care for, and feed their new friend while making all efforts to keep it safe from the treacherous dangers of the earth, but when they return to the barn after a weekend out of town they find they were unable to safeguard it from the horrors of the world. Through the tumultuous experience the boys persevere, but as each needs the rabbit for different reasons, will the the bonds of brotherly love be strengthened or destroyed by the small creature that has come into their lives?

This story is beautiful in its imagery and in its exploration of love, angst, disappointment and disillusion between brothers. Its characters, Carl and Norman, exemplify the honor and often inevitable shame we all experience, and the great love and expectation between the two is at once beautifully tender and heartbreaking. Reminds me of Faulkner or Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird. lovely, and worth reading.Product details

Rabbit A Short Story edition by Santino DeFranco Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
For just a short story with a short title, the effect of this story is profound. It left a lump in my throat and cheer in my fist for the message that was delivered in this story of loyalty and frienship between two brothers. It is the kind of story that should be delivered to schools for topics of discussion after reading, or devouring like I did. This evokes a lot of questions about the treatment of people, especially family. I loved it. This seemingly new author has hit the streets running with this excellent read.
What a great story. Won't spoil it for you here, but beautifully written in the style of a classic. Makes you want to read it again and share it with others.
Provides some insight into the difficulties growing up without much money and advantages. Shows the effects of bullying of children by their peers.
A short story it had just a little about rabbits in the plot and more about people that keep them
Great story and thoughtful writing and character development. The Rabbit combines classic American literature motifs, such as the innocence and difficulty growing up, with modern narrative and humor. In a small number of pages, the author provides a window into two children's lives-their joys, hardships, and adventures. A great read for fans of American literature.
