Reiko McKendry's debut book is a healing story. It is a balm for U.S. military veterans and others who have unresolved feelings about the relationships between the United States and Japan. Here we have a story, reaching back through the generations, that brings a surprising context to the war years.
Through the author's eyes, we can see what U.S. military involvement in Japan really meant to some Japanese people and why, for them, the United States became the hoped-for destination in a life's journey. This would be a wonderful gift or a soothing read for oneself.
Wrapped around this, the beating heart of the book, are a fascinating look at Chrysler and Chairman Lee Iacocca during Detroit's Japan-bashing years and some helpful advice about surviving our modern economy.
This really could have been three books.
Being myself an immigrant to the US I appreciate the sentiments expressed in this book which mirror very much my own experience. But Reiko's writing is so exceptional that can be only defined as "Inspirational". This should be a recommended book for all new immigrants.
This book really shows the love of America from someone born and raised outside of it. A wonderful style of writing that keeps you reading. Reiko tells it straight and I am so grateful she does. You will, too.
This is a great book of gratitude for the American soldiers and this little girl who was so affected by World War II. Reiko is very honored and thankful for what the American soldiers did for her and the others when in her country. She wrote the book as a thank you note to honor them.
