This book was interesting at times, but very uncoordinated. There were chapters when I wasn't even sure who it was who was talking. Also, the author had a terrible habit of letting her imagery run on and on before getting to the subject she was talking about. "when he gets handed it, handed the connection, like one of those flaky pastry canapes Lally Stein had served that seemed to make Dan hungrier and hungrier, the more of them he ate." Too many characters, too little clarity. It could have been a good mystery, but is ends up a jumble of conversations and long descriptions.

Mrs A Novel Caitlin Macy 9780316434157 Books Reviews

Just OK. I generally like novels where the point of view changes all the time but when the point of view switches among a bunch of women that are all basically the same--well, it just got to be a lot of effort to keep track of the story. In retrospect, though, not a whole lot of plot there.
Some authors seem to write books for their own egotistic enjoyment, rather than that of their readers. By that, I mean that they think they are better writers if they can throw a whole slew of characters into the story in the first few pages! Too many to remember, too many to care about, too many relationships to try to keep track of. I beg authors the world over...please stop.
Meh, I really wanted to like it. I kept going hoping it would lead somewhere....
i only made it past the halfway mark, so it very possibly ended better than it began. i felt like she is trying to be the next big little lies, but not succeeding. it seemed like where she was trying to build suspense, she just made things confusing and dull. this is the first book i did not finish from boredom in a very long time.
I really wanted to like this book as I used to live on the UES, but I literally could not have disliked this book more. The characters were unlikable and flat. The writing style was hard to follow, and I found myself re-reading passages to make sense of them. I normally read a book in 1-2 days, however i struggled through this book for 2 weeks before finishing. I finally gained traction in the last quarter of the book, but felt that the ending left a lot to be desired. Had the characters undergone more development and the ending packed a better punch, I think I would have enjoyed this book far more.
Could not finish this even though I tried. Just plain boring. Characters were flat. I wanted to like it but just couldn't finish this book..too bad. Plot? Not really.
This was an odd book. It held so much promise, and I liked the direction that I thought the book was going in initially. But, the writing was EXTREMELY difficult to follow. I read a lot of books - and literally had no idea what the author was saying in spots, or what her references even meant. It was almost like you are dumped into someone's brain and hear all their odd, random and unrelated thoughts, but you have no idea who the person is or the context of what they are thinking. There were chapters that the internal dialogue started immediately, and you didn't even know who the character was let alone what all their thoughts meant. There was no character that you felt drawn to, except some of the "peripheral" ones (the priest Sister, the daughter Laura, Jed Skinker was probably most likable). But the character Gwen was the most frustrating. I don't even know why she was in there, except to freak out and say "you owe her money". She had zero personality, and her backstory was disjointed - too many avenues that never really tied together. And don't get me started on the ending. No redemption for anyone. Honestly I don't even really know what it meant. There is no comparison between this book and "Big Little Lies". I am so sorry and hate to write negative reviews, but this book had promise and simply failed to deliver for me.
